The Wide World of Tungsten Rings

Many of my friends don't realize it, but there's a huge range of variety that exists for the tungsten carbide ring. There are many choices to make when picking out just what you want, but what it all really comes down to in the end is looks and style. Go for something that calls out to you, something bold and exciting. There's no point in getting a tungsten ring that you're not going to like forever. I mean, the tungsten metal lasts for decades without wear and tear, so you need to really make sure that you want it just the way you see it. Alterations are tricky and nearly impossible. I'd never think that I could tell you what to do or what you should get, since this is a blog and I don't really know your personal tastes. But when choosing a tungsten ring, make sure you take the time to browse around before you settle on one that's perfect for you.

Tungsten Vs. Tungsten Carbide

One question I get asked all the time by my colleagues is what the big difference is between tungsten and tungsten carbide. The answer is that the first one, tungsten, is a metal. The second one, tungsten carbide, is a ceramic material made by reacting the tungsten metal with carbon to form a super strong material about as tough as diamond. When people talk about tungsten rings, what they actually mean are tungsten carbide rings. However, since most people don't have the materials science background that I do, they don't realize that there is any difference at all. And so they use the phrase 'tungsten ring' and 'tungsten carbide ring' interchangeably. Silly, no? But there it is. When you're talking tungsten jewelry, there is no difference between the two.

Tungsten Carbide Wedding Rings

I thought I'd elaborate a little after my last post regarding my friend's tungsten wedding ring. People often wonder why tungsten is such a great choice. The truth is that it is just so symbolic of marriage, I couldn't imagine choosing anything else? How so? Well, tungsten carbide wedding rings are made of out of some of the toughest stuff on earth. They last through just about anything you can throw at them, including accidents involving power tools. This is a great symbol of the unbreakable bonds you form in marriage. Just like tungsten carbide can't be bent or broken, a wedding ring symbolizes a love that also will stand strong as time goes on. So the next time someone asks you why tungsten makes a great choice for a wedding band, you'll know the best reason why - symbolism.

My Friend's Tungsten Wedding Band

My friend (who shall of course remain anonymous) recently got married to his girlfriend of over seven years. About time, right? In any case, a week before the big day finally arrived, he came to ask me for advice on what to get for a wedding ring. He confessed, tiredly, that with all the other wedding considerations that he had to worry about, he never had the time to pick out a truly special and meaningful ring. Without a moment's hesitation I recommended a tungsten wedding ring. Why, you ask? Because it's clearly superior to gold wedding rings, the so-called classic. Gold tarnishes and wears away through the years, but tungsten never does. A tungsten wedding band was perfect for my friend, and he's come to me on several occasions since and thanked me for the solid recommendation.

Tungsten Rings Are Great!

I've been a materials scientist since graduating college and I never thought I'd see the day when they'd use an engineering material like tungsten in jewelry. I mean, these things are just great! I truly find them inspirational from a scientific viewpoint as well as from the viewpoint of a jewelry enthusiast. What better material to use for a ring than one that'll never break or get dull or dent or scratch or ding? I couldn't tell you personally. I only wish that I had thought up the idea myself, so that I could be rolling in money now, like the people who invented the tungsten ring surely do. Many of my friends have these, and I've become their go to guy for all the technical questions. So I'll try to make this blog as informative and useful as I can to help those of you out there with similar questions. But take it from me, tungsten rings are just fantastic!
